Sushia Izakaya and Bar

Sushia Izakaya and Bar was the latest installment at Brookfield Place this year and was new to the Perth dining scene. From hearing good reviews on Urbanspoon and through word of mouth, I have always wanted to give this place a try. So, I’ve organised a dinner to catch up with two of my friends who I have not seen in a while at Sushia.

To start off, we had some edamame ($7) to share. The edamame was cooked perfectly with a hint of salt giving it a fresh, salty flavour. You can’t go wrong with ordering edamame as your starter. It also makes a good snack too! Yes, edamame can be addictive in which Giuliana and I agreed.

I had the Gindara Saikyo Yaki ($38) which is the cod in saikyo miso marinate. The cod was seared beautifully and was full of flavour. The miso marinate blended well with the cod and it was just perfect as I could also taste the miso flavours from the cod. I loved it! I can say that the cod is probably one of Sushia’s best!

Here is Wanda’s review of the Wagyu Gyoza ($25) and Spider Maki ($22): I ordered the wagyu gyoza which consists of wagyu mince, mushroom duxelles and scallion, topped off with some sweet and sour soy sauce. The gyoza itself was very good, though a little salty for my liking. I have to say that the dipping sauce that accompanied it was what made the meal excellent. It was delicious, light and tangy contrasting the heaviness of the gyoza.

The other side I ordered along with Mel was the Spider Maki  (soft shell crab sushi roll) which came very well presented, with a twist to it. Instead of seaweed encasing the contents of the roll, thin slices of cucumber were used to add to the crispiness of the overall dish. However innovative the dish was, it was a bit of a miss for me as I found that the crab was a little burnt and therefore lacking in flavour. Regardless, I really liked the innovation and presentation style of the dish.

Giuliana had the Assorted Tempura ($20) with the spicy aioli sauce. Here’s her review of the Assorted Tempura: The prawns were succulent with crispy batter.  The spicy aioli sauce was very nice with the tempura. Although the tempura was delicious, the selection of vegetables were disappointing with duplicate vegetables. I would prefer a variety of vegetables. Overall, the dish was still flavoursome and tasty.

To finish off the dessert, we ordered the Dessert Platter ($35). (A dream come true for those with a sweet tooth!) The dessert platter was beautifully presented. I thought that the dessert platter was perfect in sampling the desserts offered at Sushia. I actually enjoyed most of the desserts on the dessert platter and thought that most of them were executed well with a nice aroma of green tea and chocolate. The favourites of the night were the green tea and chocolate mousse selections.

Overall, I think I will be back to Sushia again to try other dishes on their menu and also their sashimi. The service was quite attentive and the atmosphere is really nice. Sushia is a perfect place for catching up with friends, celebrating an occasion or a romantic date. I know it is a bit pricey but sometimes we have to splurge a bit to reward ourselves! 🙂

Mel’s Rating : mmmm (excellent)
