Malaysian Food Adventures #9: Banana Leaf at Raju Restaurant

Every Malaysian will crave for Roti Canai and Banana Leaf Rice. One year later and here I am again at Raju Restaurant. Raju Restaurant has been popular among the locals. Come down to Raju on a weekend and it is packed with families and friends indulging in Banana Leaf Rice and Roti Canai.  But don’t worry, there are usually plenty of seats around Raju as people come and go quickly. As I was there during the morning, we had the Roti Canai (RM 1.80 per piece) which was soft and fluffy. Together with the dhal provided, it was full of … Continue reading Malaysian Food Adventures #9: Banana Leaf at Raju Restaurant

Malaysian Food Adventures #8: Marini’s on 57

Marini’s on 57 is sky high dining at its finest. We finally reached Level 57, the highest floor of Menara 3 Petronas. The doors to the lift opened and we were ushered to our table next to the glass window with views over the city of Kuala Lumpur. It was one of the best views of the city one can get. The complimentary Amuse Bouche was presented as an ornament, hung on the bonsai tree where kalamata olives were coated with a combination of basil leaves and parmesan cheese. The Amuse Bouche Complimentary Bread For the Entree, I had the Tartar … Continue reading Malaysian Food Adventures #8: Marini’s on 57

From its humble beginnings in Hotel Equatorial, Kampachi has risen to fame serving authentic and high quality Japanese food. To this day, Kampachi has branched out to a few locations around Kuala Lumpur. This Kampachi outlet which is located at The Troika will bring you back to its  much-lauded days at Hotel Equatorial. Malaysian Food Adventures #5: myBurgerLab

From reading reviews and hearing about this burger joint, I was keen to check out the hype. According to many, myBurgerLab sells the best burgers in town. What’s my verdict? The burgers are damn good. We were lucky that we were not greeted by a long queue when we arrived. I have heard that sometimes the queue can be stretched to the corridors outside the shop. That’s how popular myBurgerLab is. Instagram at myBurgerLab! A foodie’s Periodic Table I had the A+ burger (RM15) and dad had the Beautiful Mess 5.0 burger (RM24 with fries and a soft drink). If … Continue reading Malaysian Food Adventures #5: myBurgerLab

Malaysian Food Adventure Series #4: Ngau Kee Beef Noodle

Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur along Jalan Tengkat Tong Shin lies Ngau Kee (Ngau in Cantonese means Ox in English) , which has been famous for its beef noodles. (There will be a signboard indicating famous beef noodles at the top, so you won’t be able to miss it) When I was growing up in Kuala Lumpur,  this was one of the places that dad would take a drive down to the city for supper. We had the Dry Beef Noodles and Beef Ball Soup. The texture of the noodle is similar to wanton noodles; topped with a … Continue reading Malaysian Food Adventure Series #4: Ngau Kee Beef Noodle

Malaysian Food Adventures #3: Yut Kee Kopitiam

A good and hearty breakfast is a must before embarking on a shopping trip. (Ladies, I am sure you would agree too) A “Kopitiam” is a traditional coffee shop which is mainly found in Southeast Asia. One of the oldest Kopitiam in KL is Yut Kee Kopitiam which has been established in 1928. To this day, Yut Kee is still famous for its Hainanese-style breakfast such as the Hainanese Chicken Chop, Roti Babi, Roasted Pork with Apple sauce and so on. We were there on a public holiday. So yes, there is a huge crowd but it did not take … Continue reading Malaysian Food Adventures #3: Yut Kee Kopitiam

Malaysian Food Adventure Series #2: Nyonya Roots

Peranakan and Nyonya cuisine is a combination of Chinese, Malay and other influences into a unique blend. Nyonya cuisine arises from blending Chinese ingredients with spices and cooking techniques used by the Malay/Indonesian community. Tangy, aromatic, spicy and herbal are a few common descriptions of Nyonya cuisine. In Nyonya Roots, the food heritage of Nyonya cuisine continues from recipes being passed down from one generation to another so that we can continue appreciating Nyonya food. The star of the night was Ah Ma’s Kari Hu Tao or Fish Head Curry. Cupid has struck us and it was love at first … Continue reading Malaysian Food Adventure Series #2: Nyonya Roots

Malaysian Food Adventures #1: Hokkien Mee

In between vendors selling fake LV and Chanel bags and many any other things that you could possibly think of, lies Kim Lian Kee. Kim Lian Kee is one of the oldest restaurants situated in the heart of Petaling Street or Chinatown at Kuala Lumpur. It was believed that Fried Hokkien Mee was invented by Ong Kim Lian, the owner of Kim Lian Kee in 1927. (It has been established over 80 years ago!) For a really good and authentic Hokkien Mee, it has to be stir-fried with charcoal fire. As there are two Kim Lian Kee restaurants in Chinatown, I … Continue reading Malaysian Food Adventures #1: Hokkien Mee

Moore & Moore

And so, the adventures to find hidden gems in Fremantle begins again. Another one of the cafes that has been on my wishlist for a while is Moore & Moore. With its mismatched furnitures and vintage decorations, Moore & Moore is one quirky cafe situated in the Moore’s Building at the heart of Fremantle. I had the Smashed New Potato Rosti ($21) which consists of mustard seed, spinach, romano cheese potato rosti topped with a poached egg, avocado, green olive and caper salsa rocket and tomato relish. I fell in love with my dish immediately. The tastiness of the potato … Continue reading Moore & Moore
