Malaysian Food Adventures #6: Nasi Lemak

Every Malaysian will crave for the good ol’ Nasi Lemak. Nasi Lemak is a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and “pandan” leaf.

If you are ever around the area to visit the Bird Park, Planetarium, Lake Gardens, Butterfly Park, Museum of the Tun Abdul Razak (2nd Prime Minister of Malaysia) and the Islamic Museum, you are in for a treat. Within the vicinity of these tourist attractions lies a popular Nasi Lemak stall at the Tanglin Food Court. The Nasi Lemak stall at Tanglin has been around for a long time since 1948.  So yes, they are very popular among the locals.

Basically you just have to choose from a range of lauk (means dish in Malay) to complement the fragrant coconut rice. Usually the dishes that are available to choose from are chicken rendang, sambal sotong, beef rendang and a few others. The Nasi Lemak costs RM2 and all you have to do is add on the lauk which will incur an additional RM 2 or RM 3, depending on what you order.

The Nasi Lemak at Tanglin is very delicious with telur goreng (fried egg), crunchy ikan bilis (anchovies), sambal and cut cucumbers. You get to experience al fresco dining under the trees too! Overall, there’s a refine taste to the Nasi Lemak. As the lauk and the other components are on one plate, the flavours still balances out and is not overpowering each other, which is executed well by Nasi Lemak Tanglin. I chose their beef rendang and the sambal sotong as my lauk. Their beef rendang is delicious and the sambal sotong gives you a chili kick! Together with the fragrant and fluffy coconut rice, it was full of flavour!  Nasi Lemak Tanglin is a must visit for delicious Nasi Lemak!
